India has seen a recent development in innovation culture, as shown by the improvements in ranking by the Global Innovation Index. The country has raised its overall score from 86 to 52 from 2015 to 2019, and ranks 32 in the Knowledge and Technology Outputs section. Its rise in technology and becoming the second most connected country has economists suspecting that India has the potential to become the next Silicon Valley.

Tech innovation is key to Akshaya Patra’s success in mass producing hygienic, tasty and nutritious meals for millions of school children. With an eye on quality and efficiency, Akshaya Patra has scaled from providing 1,500 meals in 2000 to over 1.8 million meals daily in 2020. During the pandemic, the organization has provided over 70 million meals to migrant workers in India since lockdown began on March 24th. 

Our success in large-scale operations is thanks to the integrated technology in our kitchens. The Foundation operates 55 automated, centralized kitchens that prepare between 10,000 – 250,000 meals within 6 hours. An AI calculates exactly how much food will be made the following day, and IoT sensors allow us to cook at the most efficient temperatures.

Partners of Akshaya Patra provide generous donations to allow the Foundation to advance our technology and help feed as many children as possible to further their success in school. Western Digital donated a bus to transport beneficiaries to different kitchens to be given a tour and interact with kitchen staff. The Infosys Foundation lends its voice to the midday meal program to provide constant expertise and financial support to help us reach our goal to end classroom hunger.
